If there is one thing you should never do with BTEG, that would would be to mix soil with wood chips. This will cause nitrogen tie-up and your plants will struggle to thrive and will most likely wither away.
To combat nitrogen tie-up, it is best to move the wood chip aside, plant your plant in the soil and cover back up with the wood chip and never mix the two.
If you have manure or compost lay it on the soil and then wood chip on top. This will help prevent nitrogen tie up.
Also using aged composted wood chip helps. If you use fresh wood chip, never let it mix and you will be fine.
